The Power of Name Dropping (it might not be what you think!)
What do I mean by "Name Dropping?"
When you hear the term “name dropping,” what does that mean to you?
If you’re like me, you’ve heard it in pop culture - used when someone casually drops the name of someone famous into a conversation. As in, “I ran into my friend Johnny the other day - you know, Johnny Depp? It was so good to see him. Have you two met?”
When I say name dropping, I don’t necessarily mean THAT. What I do mean is this: When you are talking to someone, you have the power to drop the names of the businesses that mean the most to you. As in: “Have you ever been to _________ in Lebo? Oh my gosh, it’s AMAZING. You have to check it out next time you’re in town!”
Why's it so important?
Some of you probably do this all the time. Some of you probably think it would be awkward. But let me tell you - I’ve used this strategy on complete strangers in my role as Chamber Director and it’s never ended badly. I’ve sent quite a few individuals, couples and families on their way to a fun new restaurant or shop that they wouldn’t have stopped by otherwise.
In communities where foot traffic isn’t a given, this kind of boost to your local businesses can have a huge impact. Not only do new people visit the store or restaurant, but if they have a good experience, THEY can then name drop it to their friends, family and acquaintances. They might even post about it on social media - because what’s cooler than going to a place none of your online friends have been to before?
This may seem small - and it is. It takes almost no effort and maybe just a little bit of practice for some of us. The impact, though, can be immense. So, next time you’re chatting with grandpa, your cousin from Tonganoxie, or that nice lady you just met at the coffee shop, don’t be afraid to hype up your favorite small business using your newest super power: name dropping!
