Tech Tip #1: Picking Prime Photos
Why use photos in your advertising?
Here are a few reasons:
1. Photos depict the real world, and your customers want to see what's happening!
2. Photos are incredibly convenient - you can snap them with a cell phone anytime!
3. Photos done well can elevate your brand.
4. Photos lend credibility - if customers can SEE the work you're doing and the products you're offering, they'll know you're legitimate.
How do I get started?
It's easy - snap a photo!
There are a few basics to keep in mind: Photos should be bright, clear (not fuzzy), and YOUR entity needs to have the legal rights to use the photo. This gets trickier for photos that a) have people in them and b) aren't yours. Be sure to look into the laws surrounding your specific situation!
Now, what should I snap a photo of?
There are a few subjects people LOVE to see:
1. PEOPLE
People like to see people! Especially people they know. If you've got friends and family who are willing to model for you, it's a great way to increase engagement with your content. Kids are also excellent subjects - just be sure you have all the right permissions in place to use photos of children. And don't forget about your employees! Featuring your employees can be a great way to familiarize online followers with your business and add a personal touch to your social media presence.
2. ANIMALS
Most people react positively to puppies, kittens, and barnyard babies like goats and calves. It's usually a safe bet to include animals in your posts if the opportunity presents itself - just be sure to keep in mind who your audience is when doing so.
3. GREEN
People tend to be drawn to nature and growing things. Bright colors like healthy green grass and blue skies can be especially inviting. Flowers and foliage can make great props and backgrounds, and add color to photos of your products or place of business!
4. FOOD
Yep, people like food - big surprise! BUT, there are a few things to keep in mind:
1) It's always better to post your real food rather than stock photos. People can tell when you're just using generic photos of food.
2) Presentation is important. Put your food on a nice dish, make sure the plate and food are tidy and clean, and ensure you have a nice background with good lighting. Showcasing your food with an ugly background or in poor lighting isn't going to make it look its best!
3. Don't be afraid to look at examples online - or hire a food photographer if you feel like this just isn't for you. Having great photos of your food IS worth the extra trouble!
4. Don't be afraid to mix people and food! I'll bet you or your employees have great smiles. Give them a dish to showcase and snap a photo - you get bonus points for two prime subjects in one photo!
